The circumference of a tire is the distance the car moves forward each time the wheel turns once. It is a basic number behind many others: how many times the wheel turns in a mile, how fast the speedometer thinks you are going, and the engine speed at highway cruise. Changing tire size changes it, which is why it is the first number to check when you fit larger or smaller tires. This calculator works from a tire size code or an overall diameter and gives circumference, revolutions per mile and kilometre, and wheel rpm at the speed you choose.
How to use the tire circumference calculator
- Choose what you know: the tire size code (225/45R17) or the overall diameter (for example 31 inches).
- Enter the numbers. For a size code give the width in mm, the aspect ratio and the rim diameter; for a diameter enter it in inches or mm.
- Enter a speed to see the wheel's rpm at that speed.
- Read the circumference, revolutions per mile and per kilometre, and wheel rpm.
For the full set of size dimensions see the tire size calculator; to see the effect on the speedometer, the speedometer error calculator; for engine speed, the engine RPM calculator.
Tire circumference formula
Circumference = π × diameter
Revolutions per mile = 63,360 ÷ circumference (in)
Revolutions per km = 1,000 ÷ circumference (m)
Wheel rpm = speed ÷ circumference
- 63,360 — inches in a mile (5,280 ft × 12)
- At 60 mph the car covers a mile a minute, so wheel rpm equals revolutions per mile
Worked example: 225/45R17
- Sidewall: 225 × 0.45 = 101.25 mm = 3.986 in; diameter: 17 + 2 × 3.986 = 24.97 in.
- Circumference: π × 24.97 = 78.45 in (1.993 m).
- Revolutions per mile: 63,360 ÷ 78.45 = 807.6.
- At 70 mph: wheel rpm = 70 × 807.6 ÷ 60 = 942 rpm.

Why circumference matters
The speedometer in most cars counts wheel turns and converts them to speed using the factory tire's circumference. If the new tires are 3% larger, each turn covers 3% more road, so the true speed is 3% higher than the dial shows and the odometer under-counts distance. That is why the standard advice is to keep the overall diameter within about 3% of the original; the tire size comparison calculator shows the difference between two sizes.
Circumference also sets the engine's speed for a given road speed. Engine rpm equals wheel rpm times the transmission ratio times the final drive ratio, so a larger tire lowers the engine rpm at the same speed — useful for relaxed highway cruising but it reduces acceleration. Gear and engine speed calculations use the figure here: see the engine RPM calculator and the gear ratio calculator.
For precision, remember that the circumference calculated from the nominal size is not exactly the rolling circumference. A loaded tire flattens a little where it touches the road, reducing the effective rolling radius, and wear shrinks it further. Manufacturers publish measured “revolutions per mile”, which can differ from the calculated value by a few percent. Use the calculation for comparisons and planning, and published figures where accuracy matters.

The geometry follows the ISO metric tire designation (width in mm, aspect ratio as a percentage of width, rim diameter in inches). The 24.97 in diameter for 225/45R17 agrees with tiresize.com reference data collected on 2026-10-09. Unit definitions: 1 in = 25.4 mm and 1 mile = 63,360 in. Table values were computed from the formulas shown.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate tire circumference?
Find the overall diameter (rim + two sidewalls) and multiply by π. For 225/45R17 the diameter is 24.97 in, so the circumference is 24.97 × 3.1416 = 78.45 in.
What are revolutions per mile?
How many times the tire turns over one mile: 63,360 inches ÷ circumference. It is the number speedometers and gear-ratio calculations are based on.
How do I calculate wheel rpm from speed?
Wheel rpm = speed ÷ circumference. At 60 mph (one mile per minute), the wheel rpm equals the revolutions per mile.
Is this the same as the rolling circumference?
A loaded tire is squashed slightly at the bottom, so its rolling circumference is a little less than π × diameter — usually 1–3% less. Tire makers publish “revolutions per mile” measured under load for exact numbers.
Why does the circumference matter?
It sets how far the car travels per wheel turn, so changing tire size changes speedometer readings, odometer distance and engine rpm at a given speed.
