Pickup trucks are among the most popular vehicles on the road and among the most expensive to own: higher prices, larger fuel bills and often longer loans. The monthly payment is only part of the picture, and the first thing a truck buyer should do is look at the full monthly cost. This truck loan calculator works out the payment and total interest on a truck loan, then adds insurance and fuel — from your own mileage and mpg — to show what the truck will actually cost to run each month.

How to use the truck loan calculator

  1. Enter the truck price, your down payment and any trade-in.
  2. Add sales tax and fees (title, registration, documentation).
  3. Enter the APR and term in months.
  4. Add insurance, miles per year, mpg and fuel price for the all-in monthly cost.
  5. Read the payment, interest and total repaid and compare terms.

Before you buy, check that the truck can handle your trailer with the towing capacity calculator. For cars, see the car payment calculator and the auto loan calculator.

Truck loan formula

Truck: payment by term$46,580 financed at 7% APR4 yr$1,115/mo5 yr$922/mo6 yr$794/mo7 yr$703/moInterest: $6,960 (4 yr) → $12,473 (7 yr) motormaple.com
Longer terms lower the payment, but add thousands in interest.
Loan = price × (1 + tax) + fees − down payment − trade-in
Payment = Loan × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)^−n)
Total interest = Payment × n − Loan
  • r — monthly rate (APR ÷ 12); n — number of monthly payments
  • At 0% APR the payment is the loan divided by the number of months

Worked example: $48,000 truck

  1. Amount financed: 48,000 × 1.06 + 700 − 5,000 = $46,580.
  2. Monthly rate: 7% ÷ 12 = 0.5833%.
  3. Payment over 72 months: $794.14.
  4. Total interest: $794.14 × 72 − 46,580 = $10,598.28.
  5. Adding $1,800 insurance a year and fuel (12,000 ÷ 18 × $3.50 = $2,333 a year): $1,138.59 a month all in.

Payment by loan term

The table keeps the $46,580 loan at 7% and changes only the term. Every figure is calculated with the formula above.

5 years$922.34$8,760$55,340

7 years$703.02$12,473$59,053

Why trucks cost more than the payment suggests

A pickup uses more fuel per mile than a car, costs more to insure and has bigger tires and brakes to replace. In the example, fuel alone adds about $194 a month on top of the loan payment. Using your own miles and mpg in the calculator puts that cost into the decision before you sign.

Truck loans also run long. Because prices are high, 72- and 84-month terms are common, and they cut the monthly payment at the price of thousands of dollars in interest and a longer period of owing more than the truck is worth. A bigger down payment is the best defence; it reduces the loan, the interest and the risk of negative equity.

Finally, buy for the job. A truck bought for towing needs the payload and towing capacity to match the trailer; the towing capacity calculator shows the limit that governs. One bought for commuting may be better served by a smaller vehicle, whose lower running costs are easy to estimate with the fuel cost calculator.

The payment is the standard amortization (annuity) formula used for all installment loans; its 6%/60-month check ($193.33 per $10,000) agrees with published loan tables. Example prices, rates, mileage and fuel costs are illustrative, not quotes.

Frequently asked questions

How is a truck loan payment calculated?

Add tax and fees to the price, subtract the down payment and trade-in, and apply the standard amortization formula at the monthly rate over the term in months.

Why include fuel in a truck loan calculator?

Trucks use more fuel than most cars, so fuel can add hundreds of dollars a month to the loan payment. The all-in figure includes insurance and fuel, based on your miles, mpg and fuel price.

Does the truck I tow with need to fit the trailer?

Yes. Check payload, tongue weight and the combined weight rating before buying; the towing capacity calculator shows which limit governs.

Is a longer loan a good idea for a truck?

It lowers the payment but increases interest and keeps you owing more than the truck is worth for longer. Pick the shortest term you can comfortably afford.

Does this work for work trucks or commercial loans?

The payment formula is the same for any fixed-rate installment loan. Commercial lenders may add fees or balloon payments that are not modelled here.
